The True Story Behind "Hostie"Hostie, a real Holstein cow, was Jim’s 4-H project while growing up on a small farm in Anderson County, SC. Hostie grew to become an unusual cow, one that loved and thrived on human company as long as there was a “treat” involved, like butterbean hulls, peanut vines, corn cobs and even an old dry hard leftover biscuit from the kitchen.
Hostie was easy to train (walking slowly in a rhythmic fashion) for competing at the various fairs, which were huge family affairs – with shampoo baths, painting of hoofs, trimming of excess ear hair and generally cleaning and shining of the cow from head to tail before the actual show. This book should have special appeal to those who have ever lived on a farm or have had relatives who farmed where dairy cattle were raised. It should also be entertaining to those who love and cherish relationships with animals. Hostie lived a contented life and gave those who loved her much happiness. |
